Useful phrases to describe your favourite book. I'll talk about my favourite book, it's called And Quiet Flows the Don. A fascinating story about the life of the Don Cossacks in the 20s during the Russian civil war.


  1. And Quiet Flows the Don is a novel by Mikhail Sholokhov. It was written one hundred years ago.
  2. It is story about Cossacks in the early 20th century.
  3. This book is not included in the list of compulsory reading in school, nevertheless it is very well known in Russia.
  4. I read this book when I was an adult. I was about 30 years old.
  5. I doubted that I would read it in full when I started reading this book. The thing is, I don't like books about war and revolution.
  6. To my surprise, I found that the book was not about that at all.
  7. I found it is a book about people like you and me. They just lived 100 years earlier.
  8. The author of this book has a very strong literary talent. I felt the characters and their emotions very closely.
  9. I took this story to my heart. I think I would act the same way if I were in the same circumstances.
  10. As a result, I realized that nothing has changed in 100 years.
  11. People are always the same, they always want the same thing, they feel the same and face the same obstacles in their life.
  12. There is an opinion that the book was written not by Mikhail Sholokhov, but by Fyodor Kryukov. There is an opinion that Sholokhov had stolen the manuscript from a dead Imperial officer.
  13. But it doesn't matter to me. No matter who wrote it, it's the greatest story.
  14. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about Russia.
  15. History cannot be understood through numbers, dates and events. History can be understood through such stories.
