Advertising Methods

Advertising Methods1

Some of the methods used in advertising are unethical and unacceptable in today’s society.

To what extent do you agree with this view?

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

You should write at least 250 words.

Advertising is an integral part of our lives. Promoting your products through advertising is a natural process. Advertising helps the seller to tell about their product, and the consumer to learn about it. However, some methods of promotion cannot be considered as adequate.

When we talk about unfair advertising, we can use the same measures of ethical behaviour that we use for people. The ethical person is who not to deceive people, not imposed on others or interferes in someone conversation without permission, not use unverified information, never uses bad techniques such sexual taboos, rude and indecent words, shouting or manipulation.

A lot of advertising today isn't ethical or appropriate according to the requirements above. For example, an ad may contain disinformation. The lie might be visible, such as when someone promised you very high and quick returns on investments. But dishonesty might be more hidden, such as when you have a low and attractive price in prospect, but it increases when you come to buy. There are many examples on the Internet when advertising suddenly appears in full screen. This is an example of imposition. Sometimes an article about comparing multiple products can be paid for a specific seller. It is quite clear who is the winner in comparison in this case.

The important part of ethical advertising is the ability to refuse it. If you're not interested in learning about a new product or service, why should you watch it? An example of the refusal of advertising is the ability to hide ads on the Internet sites for a paid subscription, or in the case of billboards, placing them in such places that do not interfere with the view of the road, nature or urban beauty.

Here we come to the question of supervision and regulation. This is a complex issue that must be regulated cautiously. Society should control the ethics and truthfulness of the information posted, while not limiting the right of freedom of speech.

To summarize I want to point out that advertising is a part of communication between people. When we create unethical advertising, we don't show respect to the people we communicate with.
